On Friday, December 5, 2014, I braved myself in the bitter, Chicago cold and trekked out to the School of the Art Institute Chicago (SAIC) on Wabash. I don’t normally go out of my way to see an exhibit but this was an event I did not want to miss. SAIC faculty came together with engineering and data/computer scientists in order to design a course that was the true marriage of art and science: a course on data visualization.
The exhibit, the Data Viz Collaborative, was nothing short of incredible. I enjoyed seeing interesting data visualizations for websites such as Wikipedia. There were also other exhibits that took a novel approach to visualization, including some interactive pieces. I do wish that I could have attended the 2015 exhibit but my work has kept me relatively busy this year.
The course is a novel concept that I would love to be able to be a part of sometime in the near future, especially with my knowledge and interest in information visualization and the fine arts. I look forward to being able to attend the exhibit in 2016.
